About Lumen Nursing
Lumen Nursing is a study app for nursing students preparing for the NCLEX-RN and the Next Gen NCLEX (NGN). We built it around one belief: the licensure exam isn't a memory test — it measures clinical judgment. So instead of drilling isolated facts, Lumen helps you practice the thinking a safe nurse actually does at the bedside. This page explains what we're trying to do, how the app works, who makes it, and the commitments we hold ourselves to.

Our mission
Our mission is simple: help nursing students build clinical judgment, not just memorize, so they walk into the NCLEX-RN — and into clinical practice — actually able to think on their feet. Passing matters, but the exam is really a proxy for a deeper skill. The NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of Nursing) redesigned the NCLEX as the Next Gen NCLEX in April 2023 precisely to measure that skill more directly, using its Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM).
We think a lot of study tools optimize for the wrong thing — flashcard streaks, raw question counts, or a feeling of progress that doesn't transfer to a confusing patient at 0300. Lumen is built to close that gap. Every part of the app is designed to make you better at recognizing what matters, ruling things in and out, and choosing the right action under pressure. If you want the longer breakdown of how the exam itself is structured, our Next Gen NCLEX guide and CJMM guide walk through it step by step.
How Lumen approaches studying
Lumen is a complete study system rather than a single feature. The pieces are designed to reinforce each other and map to how learning science says skills actually stick — through realistic practice, feedback, and well-timed review. Here is what that looks like in the app:
- Unfolding NGN case studies that play out the way a real shift does, scored across all six steps of the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model: recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take actions, and evaluate outcomes.
- A question bank covering 11 NGN item types — from multiple choice and select-all-that-apply to matrix/grid, drop-down cloze, drag-and-drop, ordered response, highlight, bow-tie, trend, and numeric entry — with partial-credit scoring that mirrors how the real exam grades you.
- Spaced-repetition flashcards you self-grade from Again to Easy, so concepts you almost forget come back at exactly the right moment instead of being lost.
- Care-plan tools — guided, standards-based NANDA plans plus a build-from-scratch planner — so the assessment-to-evaluation workflow becomes second nature. Our care-plan guide covers the method in detail.
- Readiness analytics — a readiness score, streaks, mastery by topic, and a 7-day due forecast — so you always know what to study next instead of guessing.
It all runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web at app.lumennursing.com under one account, with progress that syncs across every device. You can see the full breakdown on our features page, and if you want a study plan to put it to work, start with how to study for the NCLEX.
Grounded AI tutoring
Lumen includes "Ask Lumen," a context-aware AI tutor that lives inside every case, card, and question. Because it already knows the stem, your answer, and the rationale, you never have to paste context into a generic chatbot. Before you answer, it nudges your reasoning toward the right cue without spoiling the answer; afterward, it builds on the rationale and helps you rule out the distractors.
We hold Ask Lumen to a strict rule: it is built to coach reasoning and to never invent clinical values, doses, or lab ranges. AI can still be wrong, so Ask Lumen is for study only — evaluate any output against your instructors, your textbooks, and current clinical guidelines before you rely on it. We'd rather it say less and stay accurate than sound confident and mislead you.
Who makes Lumen
Lumen Nursing is made by ZeroBound LLC, a small independent software company based in Lewiston, Maine. We're a focused team that builds and ships the app directly, which means feedback from students reaches the people writing the code quickly. We're deliberately not going to dress this up with invented credentials or numbers we can't stand behind — what we can tell you is that Lumen is built carefully, reviewed against widely accepted nursing standards, and shaped by the kinds of questions students actually ask.
Have a question, a correction on content, or an idea? We genuinely want to hear it. Reach us any time at andrew@zerobound.app or through our contact page. Reports of an inaccurate rationale or a confusing explanation are some of the most valuable messages we get.
Our commitments to you
An app you trust for something as important as licensure should be honest about what it is and what it isn't. Here is where we stand:
- Educational use, not medical advice. Lumen is a study tool for nursing students. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment for real patients, and nothing in it should be used for patient care. Always defer to your instructors, your institution's policies, current guidelines, and a licensed professional. See our Terms of Service for the full statement.
- Accurate, standards-aligned content. We attribute the NGN, the CJMM, and the NCLEX-RN Test Plan to the NCSBN, and for exact current exam specifics — item counts, time limits, the passing standard — we point you to the official source at ncsbn.org rather than guess.
- Your privacy. We're careful with your data and explain what we collect and why in our Privacy Policy. Please don't enter real patient information into the app, including into Ask Lumen.
- A real free tier. Lumen has a genuinely free plan — Fundamentals questions, flashcards, and case studies, plus the planner, notes, care-plan builder, and analytics — free forever, so you can start without paying anything.
